Dobbins celebrates Earth Day

Dobbins Elementary School celebrated Earth Day with Peg Flynn of the Mahoning Valley Green Team April 10. Flynn comes to Dobbins every year to teach the students about protecting the Earth and how to conserve natural resources to the fullest extent.
“I love having Peg Flynn come every year to celebrate Earth Day,” said Cheryl Borovitcky, the principal at Dobbins Elementary School. “She is just a joy to have and it’s great to see the students learning about how to care for the Earth.”
The lessons Flynn offered were catered to children according to their grade level. Kindergartners learned about littering and how to prevent it through a puppet show, while first-graders learned about The Lorax and not using up all the natural resources.
Second-graders learned about how composting is Earth’s natural recycle system and how to make their own compost piles at home and third-graders played bingo to discover the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) and conservation and litter prevention. Fourth-graders participated in a recycle relay, in which students worked together to sort which items could be recycled from those that could not.
“The events we did today covered everything you need to know to take care of the earth,” said Flynn. “The best part is that it’s all reasonable — none of it is all that difficult to do. If everyone does their part, the earth and all its resources will be around for many years to come.”
