Austintown library, along with librarian Hayley McEwing, hosted an Angry Birds event April 9 in its meeting room. The event offered a look at architecture of many famous buildings around the world and explained how architecture links to the Angry Birds games.

“I have been seeing these kinds of events around the community and I thought they were a great idea,” said McEwing. “I like to incorporate different kids of learning and expand childrens’ ideas, like with Angry Birds. It’s not just a game now, they can see it and relate it to other things. I love to do that with new, popular things.”

Children explored Angry Birds through seven different stations. Children could create catapult crafts, build their own Angry Birds blocks, color Angry Birds sheets, play with slingshots, build structures and knock them down in several different ways, and play Angry Birds on one of the library’s iPads.

“The surprising thing, to me, is that none of the children went straight for the iPad,” said McEwing. “I thought there would be a line to use it, but I think it’s great to see kids playing hands-on. It allows them to make friends, work together and really experience what they are doing.”
