Former Boardman chief shoots self in leg

Medina police Chief Patrick Berarducci says he was accidentally shot in the leg when his gun discharged as he was pushing it into his holster while getting ready for work.

Berarducci was shot through his upper thigh when the .40-caliber handgun went off this morning.

The 62-year-old former Boardman police chief said his wife helped him stop the bleeding. He later was treated at a hospital and released.

Berarducci says the situation is a reminder that firearms are dangerous and accidents happen, even for those with extensive training.

Mayor Dennis Hanwell says an investigation will be conducted to determine if there is a training or safety issue that needs to be addressed.
