Caroline Shaw wins Pulitzer for music

NASHVILLE, Tenn.

Caroline Shaw has won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for music for her “Partita for 8 Voices.”

The award, one of seven given in the arts, was announced Monday by the Pulitzer foundation. Shaw says on her website she wrote the piece for the vocal octet Roomful of Teeth. It was released on Roomful of Teeth’s self-titled debut release last October on New Amsterdam Records.

Shaw writes of the four-part suite: “Partita is a simple piece. Born of a love of surface and structure, of the human voice, of dancing and tired ligaments, of music ...”

It is the first Pulitzer for Shaw and breaks a string of two-straight opera winners.

Her new documentary series, “Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life,” premieres next Tuesday on MTV.

Cameron Douglas’ sentence is upheld

NEW YORK

A federal appeals court in New York has upheld a judge’s decision to nearly double the five-year prison sentence given to the son of actor Michael Douglas.

Cameron Douglas had been sentenced in 2010 to five years in prison in a cooperation deal after pleading guilty to narcotics distribution. But Douglas committed several drug infractions in prison, and Judge Richard Berman boosted the sentence in late 2011.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Monday that Berman gave adequate reasons to justify the “unusually long sentence.”

The 34-year-old Douglas is scheduled for release in 2018.
