YSU’s Ciara Jarrett takes 200 meters

Knoxville, Tenn.

Youngstown State junior sprinter Ciara Jarrett won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.78 seconds at the Sea Ray Relays at UT’s Tom Blake Track at LaPorte Stadium.

SE Missouri State’s Jerika Lewis placing second (24.11).

Nina Grambling had a time of 11.80 in the 100-meter dash to finish third behind Tennessee’s Kia Jackson and Kennesaw State’s Alicia Whittle.

Also, in the 4x100-meter relay, YSU was fourth with a time of 46.15 seconds as Nicole Pachol, Jarrett, Alexis Washington and Jarrett ran for the Penguins.

Grambling also placed in the fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.76 meters and Jarrett was 10th at 5.36 meters.

Penguin tennis wins

Boardman

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team registered a Horizon League win by blanking Valparaiso 7-0 at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins won the doubles point by taking all three matches.

Max Schmerin, Felipe Rosa and Sebastian Hagn won in straight sets to give YSU the win.

Silviu Mistreanu, Dawoud Kabli and Rodrigo Campos all won in three sets for YSU (10-8, 3-2 Horizon). Valparaiso is 11-9, 0-4.

Phantoms to meet Green Bay in playoffs

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Phantoms will face Green Bay Gamblers in the opening round of the USHL Clark Cup playoffs.

The No. 2 seed Gamblers have home-ice advantage over the No. 3 seed Phantoms in the best-of-five series, which will get underway Wednesday at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis.

The Gamblers will host the Phantoms in games 1 and 2 and then the series will move to Youngstown for game 3 and, if necessary, game 4 at the Covelli Centre.

The series will return to Green Bay if necessary for game 5.

All Phantoms 2013 Clark Cup playoff games will be broadcast on Sports Radio AM 1240 and will also be webcast on FASTHockey.com.

Loyola of Chicago goes to Missouri Valley

A person familiar with the situation says Loyola of Chicago has accepted an invitation to the Missouri Valley Conference and is leaving the Horizon League.

The person, speaking Sunday on the condition of anonymity because the move has not been announced, says some details were still being finalized.

A formal announcement is expected this week, with the move taking effect on July 1.

Several outlets reported the switch over the weekend. It comes at a busy time for the school.

Loyola hired Sheryl Swoopes as women’s basketball coach last week, hoping the three-time WNBA MVP can raise the profile of that program.

Academic All-Ohio

Four local players were named Academic All-Ohio by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association.

Troy Hudson of Beaver Local has a 4.0 GPA and was named to the Boys Div. II team while Chad Oliver of Bristol has a 4.0 GPA and made the Boys Div. IV team.

Sabrina Mangapora of Canfield High has a 3.92 GPA and was named to the Girls Div. II team while Heather Brant of Pymatuning Valley has a 3.96 GPA and made the Girls Div. IV team.

In addition, Harrison Blackledge of North Canton Hoover (4.0 GPA) made Div. I. He is coached by Randy Montgomery, a graduate of Salem High and YSU.

Gregory prevails

Cleveland

John Gregory of the Southside Boxing Club won a three-round unanimous decision over Jon Bullock of the Downtown Boxing Club in the semifinals of the Cleveland Golden Gloves.

Gregory advances to next week’s final.

Also in next week’s final is Vic Toney (Southside Boxing Club) who beat Levi Patterson.
