The Lemon Grove on West Federal Street is having an “appy” hour for teachers looking to learn about tablet technology and computer applications that can benefit students. The free event, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, is sponsored by the Autism Society of Ohio Mahoning Valley Office. Melissa Ustik of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center will present information on how the iPad can help speech language pathologists. There will also be a drawing for a free Kindle Fire.

Celebrate birds

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Celebrate Birds” at 7 p.m. April 23 at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, state Route 46, Canfield. Jeff Harvey, Audubon chapter president, will present his 2012 year in bird-watching. For more information, call 888-846-8851.

Skate-a-thon

The Ice Zone on McCLurg Road will host the first Skate-a-thon April 27. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. figure skaters and hockey players will take to the ice for activities and games to raise money for their organizations. There will be games, a photo booth, food, prizes, a basket auction and face-painting, as well as public skating time from 2 to 4 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Youngstown Figure Skating Club and youth hockey programs. Wood St., from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday to fill these positions: full-time chief of transportation and custodians and substitute teachers, secretaries, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, custodians and nurses.
