Salem Historical Society to have presentation on Civil War raid by Confederates into Ohio

The historical society will have a presentation on a Civil War raid that occurred in Northeastern Ohio 150 years ago.

Timothy R. Brookes, president of the East Liverpool Historical Society, will speak about Morgan’s Raid during the 43rd Founder’s Day dinner on April 30 at the Salem Community Center. Brookes will speak about John Hunt Morgan, a Confederate who led a 46-day raid into Union territory before he was captured in Columbiana County.

The dinner, which is part of the 207th anniversary of Salem’s founding, will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a basket auction, recognition of businesses involved in the upcoming Dale Shaffer Legacy Time Capsule Project and installation of the 2013 “Citizens of Honor.”

The evening will culminate with the Civil War presentation.

According to a release from the Salem Historical Society, Brookes has written numerous historical articles for “Timeline,” and has been published by the Ohio Historical Society and “Military Images.”
