YSU tennis falls, 4-3

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 dual to UIC on Friday at the Boardman Tennis Center.

YSU (12-9, 3-2 Horizon League) split the six singles matches with the Flames, but could not get over the hump after losing the doubles point.

YSU lost at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to fall behind.

In singles play, de Man defeated Haley Craig at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2.

The Flames (12-5, 4-1) picked up wins at No. 5 as Kathryn Sharples defeated Carolyn Jesko and Kati Mebuke beat Annina Brendel 6-4, 6-4.

Marta Burak defeated Natalie Kuvakina 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Margarita Sadovnikova won 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 over Mariana Palcios.

The Youngstown State football coaches held a football women’s coaching clinic on Friday evening at Stambaugh Stadium.

A group of nearly 100 participated.

The proceeds from the fourth annual YSU Football Women’s Coaching Clinic benefit the Youngstown Purple Cat, an organization that is a creative day program for adults with disabilities.

Its primary focus is on teaching daily living skills, fostering independence and providing a creative environment for our individuals to reach their personal goals.

Dr. Melinda Wolford, wife of head coach Eric Wolford, introduced the coaching staff’s wives who were in attendance.

4 area players set for North-South games

COLUMBUS

Canfield’s Sabrina Mangapora, Columbiana’s Khylea Fullum, East Palestine’s Austen Reiser and Salem’s Ryan Bush will participate in Sunday’s OHSBCA’s North-South All-Star Basketball games at Capital University.

Fullum will play in the Division III-IV girls game that tips off at noon. Mangapora with play in the Div. I-II game at 1:45 p.m.

Reiser will be a member of the North squad in the boys Div. III-IV game at 3:45 p.m. Bush will play in the Div. I-II game at 5:30 p.m.

Fromel gets bronze

Gymnast Nick Fromel won the bronze medal in the vault at the regional tournament.

He is a member of the Youngstown Gymnastics team.

Noah Silver placed in the top 10 in two categories.

USA Cycling to train in Netherlands all year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.

USA Cycling has signed a 10-year agreement with a municipality in the Netherlands to consolidate its training base for road, mountain bike, track and cyclo-cross racing.

The facility in the Limburg municipality of Sittard-Geleen will be used year-round by about 130 athletes, USA Cycling vice president Jim Miller said Friday. Previously, the men’s endurance programs were based in Belgium, the women in Italy and the mountain bike program in Germany.

Holiday Bowl to be played on Dec. 30

SAN DIEGO

The Holiday Bowl will be played Dec. 30 and the Poinsettia Bowl will be played Dec. 26.

Organizers for the two games played at Qualcomm Stadium announced the dates and times for their 2013 games on Friday.

The 36th Holiday Bowl, which will match teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12, will kick off at 10:15 p.m. EST. Both games will be televised by ESPN.
