Rabid raccoon found in Canfield

CANFIELD

A raccoon found in the Colonial Drive vicinity tested positive for rabies. There are no known exposures to animals or humans in this case, Mahoning County health officials said.

Mammals such as raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats are believed susceptible to the rabies virus. People who find a dead raccoon, skunk or fox that is not decayed or is involved in a pet or human exposure should contact their local health department. Also, they should report bites to the health department and call their doctor for advice.

In Youngstown, call the Youngstown City Health District at 330-743-3333. Mahoning County residents should call the Mahoning County District Board of Health at 330-270-2855.

Health officials advise: Do not feed, touch or adopt wild animals, and be cautious around stray cats and dogs; teach children to leave wildlife alone; vaccinate pet cats, dogs and ferrets for rabies; keep trash can lids secure; and feed pets indoors.
