Wrong turn leads Germans from hometown to Austria

VIENNA

Instead of a five-minute trip home, a wrong turn led to an all-night drive for a pair of Germans that ended when police stopped their car in far-away Austria for heading the wrong way on a six-lane bridge.

A police statement says the couple ended up more than 150 miles away from their Bavarian hometown.

They were stopped early Tuesday after their car grazed three other vehicles while on the wrong side of a busy bridge in Linz, Austria’s third-largest city.

The two told police they apparently took a wrong turn after attending a funeral Monday evening and couldn’t find their way back.

Wednesday’s statement says the driver’s son picked up the unidentified Germans — his 77-year old father and his aunt, 70 — and drove them home.

Circus elephant wounded in drive-by shooting in Miss.

TUPELO, Miss.

A circus veterinarian says the Asian elephant wounded in a drive-by shooting in Mississippi should be recovered fully within a few weeks.

Meanwhile, a reward for information leading to an arrest has climbed to $21,000.

Dr. Dennis Schmitt, a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus veterinarian, says the 39-year-old Asian elephant named Carol will be taken home to Springfield, Mo., to recuperate.

Schmitt says the bullet hit Carol in the neck just above the shoulder, but it missed any major blood vessels or nerves.

Schmitt says the elephant has been alert and active since the injury.

Police Chief Tony Carleton says a vehicle drove past Tupelo BancorpSouth Arena about 2 a.m. and fired into the area. Police are investigating.

Ind. man calls 911, reports he’s driving drunk

ROSELAWN, Ind.

A northern Indiana man who called 911 and told dispatchers he was driving drunk and needed to be taken off the road got his wish when a deputy sheriff arrived.

State Police say 24-year-old Matthew Devore of Logansport was arrested early Monday along Interstate 65 in Jasper County. Police said Devore had a blood- alcohol level of .09, just over Indiana’s legal limit for driving. He was being held at the Jasper County Jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

State Police say Devore lost control of his car early Monday, and it ended up in a grassy median with a flat tire.

Police say Devore then called 911, saying he was a drunk and needed to be taken off the road. A deputy sheriff was then dispatched to the scene.
