Parole board: Death for man who raped, murdered infant

The state parole board says a Mansfield man convicted in the brutal rape and murder of a baby girl nearly 15 years ago should be put to death next month for the crime.

Steven Smith is scheduled for execution on May 1 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.

Parole board members were not swayed by legal counsel arguments that Smith meant only to rape six-month-old Autumn Breeze Carter, not kill the youngster while in a drunken stupor in the middle of a September night in 1998.
