The Youngstown State women won the 4x100-meter relay on Saturday with a time of 45.85 seconds at the Northeast Ohio Invitational. On the team are Ciara Jarrett, Laura Kosiorek, Alexis Washington and Nina Grambling.

Grambling won the 100-meter dash (11.78) while Jarrett was second in the 200-meters (24.12).

Kendall Homan was third in the triple jump with a leap of 11.44 meters and Alison Roth was fourth in the discus (46.65 meters).

For the men, Michael Davis placed third in the 200-meter dash (21.44) and took fourth in the 100-meters (10.63).

Clay Febus was fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.77).

Softball split

The Youngstown State softball team split a doubleheader against Wright State of the Horizon League, defeating the Raiders 7-2 and falling 3-0.

The Penguins (6-12, 1-1), who had 12 hits in game one, used a six-run first inning started by a sacrifice fly by senior Vicky Rumph.

Junior Casey Crozier picked up her fifth win of the season tossing a complete-game three-hitter with two strikeouts.

The Penguins mustered just three hits in the nightcap against the Raiders (6-23, 3-5).

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Green Bay on Saturday.

The Penguins (8-8) are 1-2 in the Horizon League while defending league champion Green Bay is 13-6, 3-0.

Green Bay won the three doubles matches winning 8-4 at No. 1 and No. 2 and 8-5 at No. 3.

In singles play, Silviu Mistreanu dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles and at No. 2, Sebastian Hagn suffered a 6-3, 6-0 setback.

At No. 6, Rodrigo Campos lost 6-3, 7-5 and Zeeshan Ismail lost a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5.

Plummer commits to YSU basketball

YOUNGSTOWN

Jalon Plummer, a 6-foot-4 guard from Romulus (Mich.) High, verbally committed to Youngstown State’s basketball team on Saturday, according to his Twitter account.

Plummer averaged 11 points and six rebounds last season for Romulus, which won Michigan’s Class A state title. Earlier, the Penguins signed San Antonio native Marcus Keene, a 5-9 point guard at Warren High.

Plummer is one of four Division I recruits from his high school team, joining Wes Clark (Missouri), E.C. Matthews (Rhode Island) and Leo Edwards (Louisiana Tech).

Umpire awards

The Youngstown Metro Umpires Association presented a variety of awards at their banquet.

Receiving softball awards were Pat Gaia and Kathleen Murphy (35 years); Paul Marovich (30 years); Richard Bedio and Bruce Brungard (25 years); Ron Demesko (20 years); Michael Dorbish, Andrew Johnson and John Sabo (each 15 years); Joe Bettura, Stephen Fee, Eric Marino and John Vicarel (10 years).

Receiving baseball awards were Paul Marovich (30 years); Steve Bada Jr. (25 years); John Sabo and Tom Tedesko (15 years) and Jeff Davis (10 years).

Curbstone Coaches

BOARDMAN

Jordan Taylor of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers will be the guest speaker at the Curbstone Coaches meeting. The group will meet at the Blue Wolfe Catering Hall Monday at noon.

Swimming gold

Rachel Klem, 10, from Crestview, won two swimming gold medals for the Piranha Aquatics program at the Lake Erie Swimming championship meet.

She was first in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard breaststroke.

Klem earned AAAA national time standard accolades in both.

She also finished third in the 100-yard individual medley, sixth in the 100-yard butterfly, seventh in the 50-yard butterfly and ninth in the 200-yard individual medley.
