Monsignor Peter M. Polando has been appointed rector of St. Columba Cathedral by Bishop George V. Murry.

Monsignor Polando was ordained June 21, 1980, after completing seminary studies at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati.

After ordination, he was appointed associate pastor at St. Mary Church in Massillon.

He served as a faculty member and associate principal at Cardinal Mooney High School.

Monsignor Polando was appointed pastor of St. Mary Church in Newton Falls while serving at Cardinal Mooney. He also has served as pastor at St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls.

He was pastor at St. Matthias and Sts. Cyril and Methodius churches and administrator of Holy Name Parish in addition to St. Matthias.

The three churches merged as Our Lady of Sorrows Parish as part of the diocesan parish reconfiguration plan.

Monsignor Polando earned a degree in canon law from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and became adjutant judicial vicar and bishop’s delegate in canonical administrative matters in the Diocesan Tribunal. He will continue his canonical work.

Monsignor Polando was named Chaplain of His Holiness by Pope John Paul II in 1997.

Monsignor Polando also served on the Board of Mediation and Arbitration for the Diocesan Office of Conciliation, is a member of the Diocesan Finance Council, and National Chaplain of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.
