Records: Ex-firefighter in Va arson case confessed

ACCOMAC, Va. (AP) — Court records indicate a former firefighter charged in connection with a string of arsons on Virginia’s Eastern Shore confessed to authorities that he set one of the fires.

Virginia State Police say ex-firefighter Charles R. Smith III and Tonya Bundick are responsible for all but a handful of the 77 fires set on the Eastern Shore since November. They were arrested on Tuesday and charged in one fire that was set late Monday night.

Court records in Smith’s case that were filed today indicated he had confessed to setting at least the Monday fire.

Bundick is scheduled to be arraigned on today. A similar hearing for Smith was postponed until May after he retained an attorney.

Smith’s attorney was not available and his office said he would not comment.
