BOARDMAN
The American Cancer Society’s Boardman Relay for Life announced its goals of 76 teams and $236,000 at the kickoff Tuesday for its 2013 relay.
The 24-hour event at the Boardman Center Middle School football stadium, 7410 Market St., starts at 6 p.m. May 17 and ends at 6 p.m. May 18, said Danielle Procopio, relay chair- woman. The theme this year is “Dream Big, Hope Big, Relay Big!”
The Boardman relay has raised more than $4 million for cancer research and local programs and services during its 20 years of existence, and finished second in Ohio last year in total money raised, Relay officials said.
The event begins with a cancer survivors’ lap to celebrate those who have survived cancer or are battling the disease. Later in the evening, the luminaria ceremony remembers those who have experienced cancer, organizers said.
Other activities Friday include games, music, live entertainment and pep rallies throughout the night.
“Cancer has affected nearly all of us in some way, either personally or through the struggle of a loved one. Eight million Americans have survived cancer and are proof of the impact cancer research has on our society. Relay for Life, the Cancer Society’s signature event, helps us get closer to finding a cure,” said Tasha Wells, an ACS representative.
