YSU women’s soccer team ties school record for wins

The Youngstown State women’s soccer team tied the school record for most wins in a season and knocked off Milwaukee for the first time with a 2-1 victory in Saturday’s Horizon League opener at Stambaugh Stadium.

The Penguins (6-4) tied the mark set by the 1997 and 1999 squads. Youngstown State also won its first Horizon League opener since joining the league in 2001.

Sophomore Jade Flory scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal and assisted on Chelsey Haney’s fourth goal of the season to lead the Penguins.

Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky recorded four saves, including two impressive diving saves, to pick up her second victory of the season.

The Penguins took a 1-0 edge just 8:37 into the match when Haney received a pass from Flory through the Panther defense and chipped a shot over the head of UWM goalkeeper Jamie Forbes from just inside the penalty box.

Junior Rachel Morrison found Flory on a low-crossing pass through the defense and Flory chipped in a shot from 25-yards out at the 69:08 mark to put the Penguins up 2-0.

With just under 20 minutes left, the Panthers (2-7-1, 1-2) cut the Penguins lead in half when Krissy Dorre intercepted a pass back to the Podolsky and found the lower-left corner of the net.
