Optimist clubs will add new contest
DUBLIN, OHIO
At the Ohio District Convention in August the 80 Ohio Optimist clubs announced they will increase their youth service projects to include a communication contest for the deaf and hard of hearing, which will broaden the opportunity for school-aged youths who are not physically able to compete in a speech contest to organize and express their thoughts by sign language.
It will be a three- to four-step competition, depending on the number who enroll. Each contest will be judged by three judges who can interpret and one certified interpreter. The club will offer a scholarship up to $3,500 for the state winner.
Area high schools are being contacted regarding this opportunity and are asked to offer applications to those who are eligible. There is no cost to enroll.
