Suspect in city killing arrested in Warren

YOUNGSTOWN

A 30-year-old accused of murder, who was indicted on multiple charges earlier this week, has been arrested in Warren.

According to police, the Mahoning Valley Violent Crime Task Force arrested Walter Douglas Walker without incident Friday in Warren. Walker has been indicted on charges of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, attempted murder and felonious assault.

The charges stem from the killing of Damon Hodges and wounding of Dustin Greenwalt during an attempted robbery on North Lane Street on March 10.

Sleepover at county board of elections

State Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, and fellow Democrats will spend the night outside the Mahoning County Board of Elections, starting at 7 p.m. Monday, in an effort to draw attention to Tuesday’s being the first day for early voting in Ohio.

Early voting starts at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The elections board is in Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave.

Mahoning is one of five counties — along with Lucas, Hamilton, Cuyahoga and Franklin — that is having a “Sleep Out the Vote” event organized by the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus. Former owner of Timberlanes indicted

SALEM

A federal grand jury in Cleveland has indicted the former owner and general manager of the Timberlanes Motor Lodge and Restaurant in Salem on seven counts of failing to report and pay employment taxes to the IRS, the U.S. Attorney said.

The seven-count indictment, filed Wednesday against Melissa Snively- Pallard, 33, of New Springfield, alleges that for seven quarters in 2006 and 2007, she failed to report and pay $93,927 in federal income, Social Security and Medicare taxes Timberlanes withheld from its employees’ wages.

Timberlanes, 544 E. Pershing St., closed in January 2009 and was sold to Unique Ventures Group of Meadville, Pa., for $1 million in a March 2011 sheriff’s sale.

AFD gets $68,000

Austintown

The Austintown Fire Department recently received more than $68,000 in federal grant money.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, announced that the department was awarded $68,778 for operations and safety by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grants program.

“Our first responders put their lives on the line every day across Ohio,” Brown said. “These funds ensure that firefighters in Austintown have the resources they need to perform their jobs safely.”

The program helps firefighters and other first responders purchase protective equipment, vehicles and gear.
