Students took a break from their classrooms and enjoyed some fresh air and physical activity during Union Elementary School’s “Walking Program” Sept.14.
Students, parent volunteers and faculty members took a 30- minute walk throughout the neighborhood and down Route 224 as a way to encourage healthy habits.
“This is the first walk of this school year and everyone’s invited to the walk. The ultimate goal is to encourage children to walk at home with their families and to promote health and fitness and the students love it. They can walk with their friends and talk and we’re not walking in straight lines,” said principal Michael Masucci.
As children walked, community members showed their approval by honking their horns and waving. Poland Township police were also present to ensure safety. Some students even wore pedometers to track the steps they had taken. According to Masucci, there will be several more walks throughout the rest of the year.
