LUNA to award scholarships at celebration


YOUNGSTOWN

Latinas United Networking Association will present two students with scholarships at the Youngstown State University Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on Oct. 6 at the Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room.

The event, part of National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations, is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. The LUNA scholarships will be awarded at 1 p.m.

The recipients are Andres Solano, the son of Paulina Montaldo of Canfield. Solano is a junior at Kent State University, majoring in managerial marketing.

He is a member of the Spanish and Latino Student Association and the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Solano is a staff associate of the Daily Kent Stater. Solano volunteers for the University Health Services and Akron Food Bank and has participated in charity events for Love 146 and Cornhole for a Cure.

The other honoree is Monica Esparra, daughter of Porfirio Esparra Jr. and Sandra Esparra of Youngstown. She is a freshman at Youngstown State University and is majoring in biology.

Esparra recently graduated from Ursuline High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Students of Stewardship Club. Esparra also volunteers at various organizations throughout the community, including St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and Park Vista Nursing Home.
