Glenwood football team falls to 0-3

The Boardman Glenwood Middle School football team (0-3) recently lost 14-8 to P. Ross Berry.

BGMS dominated the offensive side of the ball and finally pushed through with a 5-yard touchdown run from Sean Birchfield. Birchfield also added the two-point conversion.

The Spartans defense gave up one big play during the game and forced two fumbles, which were recovered by Nick Stamp and Anthony Davanzo.

Boardman defeats Lake

Mario Graziani set the tone with a long touchdown run on the first possession as the Boardman freshman football team beat Lake 19-12 on Sept. 8.

Preston Stitt later completed a pass to Tyler Dempsey on fourth down to give the Spartans a 13-6 lead. To put the game away, Alex Duda had a touchdown run, breaking many tackles to put the Spartans up for good.

The defense had three interceptions — one by Preston Stitt, one by Alex Duda and one by Brandon Fuese. Lake scored a late touchdown through the air to cut into the lead. Duda’s interception was on Lake’s final drive as it was attempting to tie the game.

Gavin Dill and Eric Ritz led the defense.

Boardman frosh lose to Glen Oak

The freshman team couldn’t find the end zone, falling 12-0 to Canton GlenOak on Sept. 15.

After Glen Oak scored on its opening possession, Boardman nearly tied the game, but the drive stalled at the GlenOak 10 on fourth down. Runs by Graziani, Gavin Dill and Duda set the pace for the drive, while Stitt completed a big third-down pass to Dempsey to keep the drive alive.

To open the second half, the Spartans moved the ball down to the 1 yard-line only to fumble the ball. Alex Birchfield was the lead blocker on a long run by Dill to get into Golden Eagles territory. On third and 17, Stitt completed a pass to Duda down to the 1.

Glen Oak put the game away with a 99-yard scoring drive to take a 12-0 advantage.

Boardman moved the ball late to attempt to cut into the lead, with runs by Dom Pastella and Graziani, and completions to Graziani and Dempsey.

BGMS downs AMS Blue

The Boardman Glenwood Middle School football team (1-3) defeated Austintown Middle School Blue 16-0. Gavin Strines scored two touchdowns from inside the 5 yard-line and Sean Birchfield capped off both scores with two-point conversion runs.

A tough Boardman defense forced four AMS Blue turnovers with fumble recoveries by Nick Stamp, Jared Hoover and Kelley Williams. Nick Augustine contributed with an interception that stopped a late first half AMS Blue drive.

Boardman 100s evens record at 3-3

The Boardman Little Spartans 100-pounders (3-3) scored a 20-6 victory over visiting Mathews last Sunday.

Blaine Strines scored first for the Spartans with Peyton Melchionne scoring on the two-point conversion for an 9-0 lead in the first quarter. Logan Cormell followed with a touchdown to pad the advantage to 14-0 at the half.

J.T. Russo stripped the ball from the Mustangs in the third quarter, while Cormell jumped on it for the recovery. Behind the blocking of Antoine White, Strines took the ball in for his second score of the game.

The offensive front of the Spartans, anchored by Aiden Holt and Jared Mahood, kept the Mustangs out of the Spartans’ backfield. Boardmn’s defense was led by Alex Lindeman.

Spartans 120s beat Mathews

The 120-pound Spartans won beat Mathews 36-6 to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Boardman offensive linemen Padraig McCarthy, Anthony Evans and Zander Schobel had the Mustangs’ defensive line on their heals, allowing quarterback Hunter Needham to score and running back Xavier Perez to tally a pair of touchdowns. Center Chandler Klinker and Perez added conversion runs.

The Spartans’ defense added 14 points to the scoreboard. Linebacker Timmy Bowser recovered a Mathews fumble in the end zone and corner Aiden Slocum intercepted a Mathews pass for a score.

The Spartan JVs finished the game with great defensive efforts by Bryson Stanley, Noah Osborne, Max Matlack and Cam Atwood.

Boardman 140s shut out Mustangs

The Boardman 140-pound squad blanked the Mustangs 36-0 to move to 4-2 overall.

After holding Mathews to just two yards on its first possession, the Spartans scored on the first play when Dylan Gurski swept the end for a 37-yard TD. Kareem Hamden ran in the conversion.

The Spartans scored again when Che Trevena rushed up the middle for a 39-yard touchdown. Trevena scored the PAT to build a 14-0 lead. Boardman’s Tim Fowler intercepted a Mustang pass on the next series and took it in for the third score of the quarter.

The Spartans were able to play everyone the rest of the game. Camryn Robinson rushed for more than 70 yards in the game. Some major contributions from Desmond Crenshaw, Jason Davis, Jackson Straight, Jake Kimble, Deven Lowry and Travis Harvey helped seal the shutout. Boardman will host Labrae tomorrow, starting at noon.
