Canfield JVs win rematch

In a rematch of last week’s JV contest that ended in a 6-6 tie, Canfield traveled to LaBrae and came away with a 14-6 victory.

Canfield scored first when Luke Morrell picked off a LaBrae pass to give Canfield the ball at the LaBrae 36. Six plays later, Nathan Fiorenza found pay dirt from three yards out and Logan Torok tacked on the extra point for an 8-0 lead.

Canfield widened the advantage in the second half. Luke Holland raced 26 yards on fourth-and-11 from the LaBrae 45 to set up Logan Torok’s five-yard touchdown run for 14-0 lead.

Canfield’s defense, led by Andrew Morchak’s interception, held off a late LaBrae charge to seal the victory.

Canfield JV Cards defeat LaBrae

The Canfield junior varsity 100-pound team improved to 3-1 on the season after defeating LaBrae 12-8 recently.

Ball control was key for offense. Nearly three quarters of possession time was held by Canfield, which scored on the only two possessions the offense had.

Philip McLaughlin’s run up the middle made the score 8-6 in favor of LaBrae after a failed conversion by Nick Smyczynski. Defensive pressure on the quarterback stopped LaBrae’s drive before halftime.

Canfield started with the ball in the second half and took all the third quarter and nearly half of the fourth quarter before Evan Perry scored on an 18-yard touchdown run to give Canfield a 12-8 advantage.

Toward the end of the fourth quarter, LaBrae drove all the way down inside the Cards’ 10 yard-line before time ran out.

Nate Myers, Caden Kohout, Philip McLaughlin, Evan Perry, Dom Marzano, Landon Beidelscheis, Antonio Gonzales, Lorenzo Rohrbaugh, and Ethan Remby were defensive standouts. The offense was powered by Nick Smyczynski, Caden Kohout, Philip McLaughlin, Zack Karas, Nate Myers, Evan Perry, Landon Beidleschies, Bryan Leaper, Andrew Hamilton, Lorenzo Rohrbaugh, and Will Thomas.

Canfield 140s improve to 6-0

The 140-pound Cards overcame injuries and a hard-hitting game to beat the Colts 22-0 last weekend. The win pushes Canfield’s record to 6-0.

Canfield took the opening drive down to the Colts 1 yard-line where Glen Griswold punched it in for the score. The Cards’ defense, led by Luigi Rohrbaugh’s three tackles for loss, shut down the Colt offense.

The Colts first drive was ended with a Rohrbaugh and PJ Hallof sack. Canfield took over with a short field and drove to the end zone. Paul Brienz scored from eight yards out and Paul French added the two-point conversion.

The Colts were getting some momentum during their next possession when Hallof stripped the ball and Carter Myers recovered his first of two fumbles.

The defenses controlled the second half until Canfield was able to score late in the fourth. Collin Hritz had a one-yard touchdown and Ritchie Herrera added the two-point conversion.

Canfield will host the Howland Little Tigers tomorrow. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Cards 120s win battle of unbeatens

The Canfield Little Cardinals 120-pound squad traveled to Falcon Stadium in Austintown last Sunday to face the Austintown Colts in a battle of unbeatens. Canfield’s defense rose to the occasion, posting its fifth consecutive shutout. The offense did its job, scoring 22 first-half points en route to a 30-0 victory.

The Colts first drive stalled out on Canfield’s 22 yard-line and Andre Crump got Canfield rolling with a 78-yard run over right tackle. Santino Marucci tacked on the conversion for a 8-0 Cardinals lead.

Marucci blasted up the middle from one yard out on Canfield’s next possession, which was set up by a Logan Torok interception for a 14-0 advantage.

The Cards put the finishing touch on the victory when Crump scrambled 4 yards to pay dirt. Jake Kowal added the conversion for the final margin.
