1540: Pope Paul III issues a papal bull establishing the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, as a religious order.

1854: The first great disaster involving an Atlantic Ocean passenger vessel occurs when the steamship SS Arctic sinks off Newfoundland; of the more than 400 people on board, only 86 survive.

1862: During the Civil War, the Union Army’s first all-black regiment, the self-described “Chasseurs d’Afrique” (Hunters of Africa), is formed in New Orleans (which was under Northern control).

1941: The United States launches 14 rapidly built “Liberty” military cargo vessels.

1942: Glenn Miller and his Orchestra perform together for the last time, at the Central Theater in Passaic, N.J., prior to Miller’s entry into the Army.

1962: “Silent Spring,” Rachel Carson’s groundbreaking as well as controversial study on the effects of pesticides on the environment, is published in book form.

1979: Congress gives its final approval to forming the U.S. Department of Education.

1987: U.S. Rep. James a Traficant Jr. represents the Youngstown area in Congress, but he’s finding some of his strongest supporters for his presidential bid in Western Pennsylvania.

William Blanchard, chairman of the Youngstown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, says morale in the force has hit rock bottom and the city should hire a full-time counselor to help officers overcome the stress of the job.

Fred DeLuca, who is retiring as manager of the Youngstown Municipal Airport, is urging Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro to name Darlene Burkey, DeLuca’s assistant secretary for 11 years, to the job.

1972: A 16-year-old youth arrested as a suspect in the $15,000 holdup of the Mahoning National Bank’s Hubbard branch admits participating in 14 armed robbers since spring, including a recent holdups at an A&P supermarket and Ben Wilkoff Jewelry.

The six Valu King markets opening in the Youngstown district will employ members of the Retail Clerks Local 298 who now work at National Tea Co. stores, but they will not be given seniority for work at National.

1962: Youngstown City Council will hold a public hearing on leasing potentials and general operating problems at Youngstown Municipal Airport.

The Most Rev. Emmet M. Walsh, bishop of the Youngstown Diocese, and auxiliary Bishop James W. Malone sail aboard the liner Constitution from New York for the first session of the Ecumenical Council in Rome.

1937: A three-day celebration at Rodef Sholem Temple will mark the 70th anniversary of the temple and the 25th year of Dr. I.E. Philo’s service as rabbi.

Youngstown Health Commissioner W.W. Ryall says that $3,000 is available for the immediate establishment of a venereal disease clinic in the city.
