The Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, is offering an Ovarian Cancer Awareness program Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. in its multipurpose room. Spearheaded by the Rosemary Flanagan Ovarian Cancer Foundation, the featured speaker is Dr. Kristen K. Zorn, a surgical oncologist specializing in gynecological and ovarian cancers. She also is an assistant professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh.

The event is sponsored by the HMHP Foundation and the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Foundation. The cost is $18. Hors d’oeuvres, wine and dessert will be served. For tickets, call 330-746-3251, ext. 195, by Sept. 28.

Fall basketball

YOUNGSTOWN

Registrations are being accepted for the Central YMCA’s Youth Fall Basketball League, open to all boys and girls age 4 to 13 in the community. Players will be evaluated and separated into teams according to skill levels and age. Practices and games are Saturdays for one hour from Oct. 13 to Dec. 15.

Players should register by Sept. 29 at the front desk of the Central Y at the corner of Commerce and Champion streets. The cost is $45 for Y members and $65 for non-members. A $10 late fee will be charged after Sept. 29. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.

World Habitat Day

SALEM

Habitat for Humanity of Northern Columbiana County and the Habitat ReStore will celebrate World Habitat Day on Saturday to highlight the need for decent housing around the world.

The Habitat ReStore, 721 E. Pigeon Road, has been selling small paper houses throughout the month of September to raise money and awareness for World Habitat Day. When shoppers buy a paper house, they are asked to sign their name, and the house is added to the store’s display wall. All proceeds from the sale of paper houses helps Habitat’s housing ministry in Northern Columbiana County.

The ReStore also is having a special sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to mark World Habitat Day as well as the ReStore’s fourth anniversary. There will be items available at sale prices as well as refreshments and information about Habitat for Humanity. There will also be construction volunteer opportunities available at 317 E. 4th St., Salem, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. For information about the ReStore or volunteering, call 330-337-1003.

Candlelight vigil

The annual Sojourner House Domestic Violence Shelter’s Candlelight Vigil is at noon Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time when Sojourner honors victims and praises successes.

Whispering Oaks, an independent senior living community in Hermitage at 260 S. Buhl Farm Drive, is offering educational “Let’s Talk Seniors Æ” seminars Oct. 5 and 13. All seniors and families are invited free of charge.
