The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities will have an open house and levy kickoff party from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Fairhaven Niles Workshop, 420 Lincoln Way.
There will be performances by the Fairhaven Drum Circle, Fairhaven Cheerleaders, carnival games, firetrucks courtesy of the Niles Fire Department, tours, exhibitions, photo opportunities with Batman, music, dancing, blood-pressure checks, food and beverages. All are free.
Fairhaven has a 1.5-mill, 10-year renewal levy on the ballot in November.
Candidates night set at Maplewood
CORTLAND
The Maplewood High School senior government class, in cooperation with the Trumbull County Trustees Association, will have a candidates night at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 in the cafeteria of Maplewood High School, 2414 Greenville Road.
Candidates will speak and answer questions from the audience. Refreshments will begin at 6:30 p.m. Candidates from throughout the county are invited to participate, as well as other candidates.

Beer contest
BOARDMAN
Boston Beer Co. is having Samuel Adams beer stein-hoisting competitions nationwide this fall to celebrate Octoberfest, and a new Boardman restaurant has been selected as a regional location.
The Magic Tree Pub & Eatery, 7463 South Ave., will have the contest at 7 p.m. Oct. 6. During the competition, participants will hold a large stein for as long possible. The national grand prize is a trip for two to the 2013 Oktoberfest Celebration in Munich, Germany. To sign up for the competition, go online to vewinebeer.com.
