BOARDMAN

The Householder family of Columbiana County has been selected as the 2012 honoree family for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Boardman/Youngstown Walk to End Alzheimer’s event planned Oct. 13 at the Lariccia Community Center in Boardman Park.

They will participate in the opening ceremony and share their personal journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

Rebecca Miller of Columbiana is representing the Householder team of walkers. She said that the family started participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s the year after the death of her father, Eugene D. Householder. He died Aug. 15, 1995, and suffered from Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Miller said that most of the family members travel more than an hour to participate in the Boardman Walk.

Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. and the opening ceremonies begin at 9:30.

A new feature for the event will include the Promise Garden, which will provide representation to individuals who have been affected by the disease and their families. Each participant will be given a promise flower making a commitment to fulfill their promise to remember, to honor, to care and to fight against Alzheimer’s. Paper flowers of blue, yellow, purple and orange will be representative of those who have the disease, those supporting or caring for someone with the disease, those who have lost someone and those who support the cause and a vision of the world with Alzheimer’s. Participants will be given the opportunity to write a personal message on their flowers.

Many sectors of the community including health care, business, civic and service groups, professional organizations, churches and family members will participate.

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place in more than 600 communities and includes all ages. Alzheimer’s is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.

There is no cost. Participants are encouraged to seek donations from family members, friends, co-workers and other contacts.
