New director of diversity affairs brings experience to NEOMED

Northeast Ohio Medical University selected Andre Burton as the new director of diversity affairs for the university.

In the role, Burton will focus on improving inclusion and cultural competency through a variety of initiatives, including the “Value Community” initiatives; support of underrepresented students; education, training and programming; collaborations and assessment; and, outreach with community partners.

“Andre brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision of cultural competency education and inclusive environments that will energize and support our NEOMED community as we continue to diversify our landscape through collaborations, dialogue and education,” said Sandra Emerick, chief student affairs officer at NEOMED.

Before joining NEOMED, Burton served as the District Director III of Diversity and Inclusion at Cuyahoga Community College, where he spent eight years developing the college’s diversity and inclusion program, worked collaboratively to provide diversity programming, served as a diversity trainer in areas of diversity awareness, cultural competency, and generational diversity and managed budgets in excess of $500,000 as an executive level administrator.

Burton is a graduate of Kent State University and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He is a licensed attorney in Ohio and has more than 15 years’ experience as the chief diversity and equal employment opportunity officer in higher education and the public sector as well as 10 years of experience in development and implementation of various diversity training programs and workshops.

He lives in South Euclid.
