Poland Historical Society additional open house

The Poland Historical Society will host an additional Sunday open house at the Little Red Schoolhouse this year. Visitors can tour the one-room schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (state Route 224) at the Struthers Road intersection in Poland Township, on Oct. 14 from 1-3 p.m.

Bike smart at Mill Creek

Mill Creek MetroParks will be hosting the Bike Smart program, instructed by Mill Creek MetroParks Police Bike Patrol Officer Christian Hunter and Recreation Program Coordinator Angela McGrady. The program will take place today from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be bike riding lessons, a 10-mile bike ride, free gifts and more.

Bring a bike, helmet, and packed lunch. There is a $2 fee for Mahoning County residents and a $3 fee for non-residents. Call 330-740-7106 to register.

Fall events at White House Fruit Farm

Special fall outdoor events continue every weekend through Oct. 21 at the White House Fruit Farm in Canfield. Fall hours for the market are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. White House Fruit Farm is located 10 minutes south of Canfield on Route 62. 20th anniversary celebration is today

The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be today from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224.

The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.

School of nursing to host annual alumni luncheon

The 25th annual alumni luncheon for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing will be held on Oct. 6 at The Center at Brittany Place, 336 Vienna Ave (Route 46), Niles.

Poland Relay for Life

Today, there will be a craft show and car show at the Negley Volunteer Fire Department, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. All profits from the refreshments will be donated to the Poland Relay for Life.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Poland library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Thursday in Sept. at 10:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Lego my library

Kids, ages 6 and up, can meet at the Poland library on Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Poland library every Thursday in Sept. at 1 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Kids vote elections 2012

Vote for your favorite storybook character at the Poland library during regular business hours for the month of Sept.. Nominate your favorite storybook character; one nomination per library visit. Top storybook characters from the Sept. nominations will be on the October ballot. There will be three categories: toddler/preschool, grades K-2, and grades 3-6. In Oct. come to the Library to vote. Results will be posted Nov. 7.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome.

You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Trim a tree in Sept.

Children of all ages are welcome to decorate an ornament throughout the month of Sept. during regular hours at the Poland library for the all-seasons tree. Make a sky craft. Make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarian’s desk during regular business hours at the Poland library during the month of Sept. This event is for all school-aged children.

Blood pressure screenings by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offered at the Poland library on Tuesday from 1-4 p.m.

Libraries to offer Sunday hours

Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries are now open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
