Fall lecture series at the Canfield Historical Society

The Canfield Historical Society will be hosting a fall lecture series at the Bond House, located at 44 W. Main St, Canfield, across from the Canfield library. Lectures are free and open to the public. No pre-registration is necessary. Lectures are appropriate for all ages.

Upcoming lectures in the series are “History of Ohio Quilting” by Clare Neff and Betty Aberson on Oct. 11 and “Select Pieces from the Canfield Historical Society Collection” by Canfield High School Curator Laura Zeh on Nov. 8.

Bike smart at Mill Creek

Mill Creek MetroParks will be hosting the Bike Smart program, instructed by Mill Creek MetroParks Police Bike Patrol Officer Christian Hunter and Recreation Program Coordinator Angela McGrady.

The program will take place today from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be bike riding lessons, a 10-mile bike ride, free gifts and more. Bring a bike, helmet, and packed lunch.

There is a $2 fee for Mahoning County residents and a $3 fee for non-residents. Call 330-740-7106 to register.

Fall events at White House Fruit Farm

Special fall outdoor events continue every weekend through Oct. 21 at the White House Fruit Farm in Canfield.

Fall hours for the market are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. White House Fruit Farm is located 10 minutes south of Canfield on Route 62.

School of nursing to host annual alumni luncheon

The 25th annual alumni luncheon for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing will be held on Oct. 6 at The Center at Brittany Place, 336 Vienna Ave (Route 46), Niles.

Girl Scouts open house

The Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio will host an open house at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the Canfield United Methodist Church. Attendees will meet other adults and girls in the community running troops. Adults may volunteer to be a group leader. Registration and volunteer applications will be available at the open house. The cost is $12 a year to become a member of the organization. 20th anniversary celebration is today

The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be today from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224. The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Canfield library every Tuesday in September at 1:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guess ‘n go at the library

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during regular business hours during the month of September. The closest guess wins. This event if for children of all ages.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16. To coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County.

Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork.

Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award.

Entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Cross the finish line

Think you know young adult fiction? See if you can identify the title of the book from just the novel’s last sentence during regular business hours at the Canfield library throughout the month of September. If you know your lines, you could win a prize. The event is for teens in grades 7-12.Women’s book discussion club to meet

The Canfield women’s book discussion group will meet every third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. If you are interested in joining a book club or attending a Conversation Salon, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086 for more information.

Library books for Nook users

Learn about downloading library ebooks to your Nook device and how to use the digital catalog on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Space is very limited, so sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library to register for this event.

Libraries to have Sunday hours

Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries are now open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
