Phantoms’ laptop stolen

Police are trying to find the person who stole a laptop belonging to the Youngstown Phantoms hockey team.

According to police reports, a coach for the team was preparing for a new hockey season when he looked in the storage area and noticed the $950 laptop missing. The computer was last seen in the storage area in May.

2 sought in Kohl’s theft

Police have identified one suspect and are looking for a second accused of shoplifting items valued at more than $1,200 from a township store and then hitting a store employee with their vehicle.

Employees at Kohl’s in the Shops at Boardman Park told police that two women, one of whom had a toddler with her, filled large bags with clothes Monday afternoon while in the dressing room and left without paying, according to reports.

The women fled to a waiting vehicle and drove away with a door still open, which hit a store employee, records state.

Police said they could see the vehicle speeding out of the parking lot on security footage and making a left turn through a red light onto U.S. Route 224.

Woman shot in legs

WARREN

A 32-year-old Niles woman was shot once in each leg at 10:55 p.m. Monday while driving on Freemont Avenue Northeast.

The woman continued driving but eventually stopped in the parking lot at the BP gas station on East Market Street. An ambulance took her to St. Joseph Health Center.

Police say it’s not clear whether the shooter was on foot or in another vehicle. The woman suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.

Radiothon begins

Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s fourth annual “Miracles and Promises” Radiothon began today and runs through Friday.

The radiothon, which features stories about local patients who have received services from the hospital and spotlights hospital services and programs, is broadcast live on Mix 98.9 and 570 WKBN from the main lobby of Building D on the Beeghly Campus, 6505 Market St., from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

All money raised during the event stays in the Mahoning Valley to benefit local children and families. Donors can call 1-888-746-9890 any time during the radiothon to make a pledge, or donate online at www.akronchildrens.org/mv.

In the first three years, the radiothon raised nearly $400,000, said JoAnn Stock, Akron Children’s director of development.

Photography exhibit

YOUNGSTOWN

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Jose Galvez presents a photographic historical record of the Latino experience in America at 5:30 p.m. today preceded by a reception sponsored by AVI Food Systems at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor (Steel Museum), 151 W. Wood St.

His presentation, titled “Jose Galvez: Among My Travels — A Photographic Journey,” is free. Doors open at 4 p.m. for review of the exhibit.

Galvez has spent more than 40 years traveling across the country creating a historical record of the daily lives of Latinos. His appearance is part of Youngstown State University’s Hispanic Heritage Month activities.
