Black Monday ceremony scheduled tomorrow
Black Monday ceremony scheduled tomorrow
Tomorrow marks the 35th anniversary of Black Monday, when on Sept. 19, 1977 Jennings R. Lambeth, former president of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co., announced the closure of the company’s Campbell works, throwing 5,000 employees out of work.
At 10 a.m. Wednesday, some of those steel workers and public officials who lived through the closing of the mill will gather at the Campbell Administration Building located at 351 Tenney Avenue to commemorate the anniversary and have a discussion about the fateful day.
Anyone with memorabilia is welcome to come and show it. The event is open to the public. Public officials will also be on hand to share their thoughts. Steel workers who remember Black Monday are strongly encouraged to attend.
