GM’s 104th birthday passes quietly

FLINT, Mich.

General Motors Co.’s 104th birthday is passing quietly in Flint, the onetime automaking powerhouse where the company began.

Four years ago, organizers made a big production of GM’s centennial.

GM spokesman Tom Wickham tells Mlive.com that the Detroit-based automaker isn’t planning a celebration this year.

William C. “Billy” Durant was working from his office at Buick headquarters in Flint when he began putting together the deals to create GM. GM’s incorporation papers were filed in New Jersey on Sept. 16, 1908. The first GM car was a Buick built in Flint on Oct. 1, 1908.

CAW focuses on Ford

TORONTO

The Canadian Auto Workers union will focus on reaching an agreement with Ford as negotiations continue with all of Detroit’s Big Three automakers with a strike deadline looming tonight, the head of the union said Sunday.

CAW President Ken Lewenza said talks with Chrysler and General Motors will continue, but high level talks will be focused on Ford.
