“BOARDWALK EMPIRE” (9 p.m., HBO): The Roaring ’20s are just getting under way as this Emmy-nominated gangster drama launches its third season, and the newly married Nucky (Steve Buscemi) is doing his best to put all the recent turmoil behind him (RIP, Jimmy Darmody). But trouble lurks in the form of Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale), a New York bootlegger with a violent temper and a score to settle.

“Weeds” (10 p.m., Showtime): Say farewell to pot-peddling soccer mom Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker). After eight seasons of highs and lows, the stoner comedy “Weeds” goes up in smoke with its series finale.

Screaming Orphans concert at campus

Sharon, Pa.

Irish rock band the Screaming Orphans will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at Penn State Shenango’s campus auditorium.

The band is made up of the four Diver sisters from Bundoran, Donegal County. While the sisters have never forgotten their roots in traditional Irish music, they have absorbed many pop influences over the years. They are known for their four-part harmony that has led them to collaborations with Sinead O’Connor, Joni Mitchell, The Chieftains, Baaba Maal and the Afro Celt Sound system.

Scholar to speak at Packard hall

Richard Norton Smith will kick off the Trumbull Town Hall lecture series with his presentation at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Packard Music Hall. Tickets are $25 at the door. Season tickets are $60; call 330-373-1900.

Smith is a historian who has authored several books.

A scholar in residence at George Mason University near Washington, D.C., he is currently working on a biography of Nelson Rockefeller.

Smith brings American presidents to life for his audiences.

He was named ABC News presidential historian in 2007.
