NEW CASTLE, Pa.

A western Pennsylvania man has been jailed on charges he ripped the gold cross necklace from an 87-year-old woman who answered her front door.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for 23-year-old Michael Yesko, of Shenango Township, who faces a preliminary hearing Tuesday on charges of robbery, theft and receiving stolen property.

Police in New Castle say the theft occurred when Yesko knocked on the woman’s door just before noon Tuesday and asked to speak with her son. Told he wasn’t home, Yesko began writing down his phone number to give to the woman’s son before snatching the cross from her neck and leaving in a pickup.

Police say they arrested Yesko when he was pulled over based on a description the woman gave.

He remained in the Lawrence County Jail on Friday.
