Youngstown State athletics is launching a new social media fan engagement program where fans can show their support for Penguins athletics through a combination of in-game social media campaigns, engaging teams on social networks and earning rewards through a new Penguin Points Social Rewards program.

Developed as part of a Horizon League initiative and in partnership with Lodestone Sports, fans receive points for participating in social media activities such as ‘liking’ Facebook posts, commenting, sharing, tweeting hashtags, re-tweeting, watching a YouTube video and checking in on Foursquare or Facebook.

Fans can sign up for the program at penguinpoints.com.

M&M Golf Classic

A field of 144 golfers participated in the M&M Golf Classic.

This tournament was hosted by Mark & Mike Sahli and was held on Sept. 2 at Mill Creek Golf Course.

This scramble event was won by the team of Rich Bruno, Dan Ramun, Dennis Mikkelsen and Steve Sofocleous who posted a score of 56.

The proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Akron Children’s Hospital located in Boardman and Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House.

CWV Golf champs

The winners of the Catholic War Veterans Treasure Chest golf league are Lenny Bruno, Al Bisker and Dennis Barnett.

Phantoms preseason

YOUNGSTOWN

The 2012-13 Youngstown Phantoms will suit up for the first time this weekend.

The fourth-year United States Hockey League franchise will face Team USA in a pair of preseason exhibition games on Saturday and Sunday in Michigan.

Saturday’s game is a 7 p.m. EST start. The Phantoms and Team USA will meet again Sunday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, the National Team’s home rink, for 3:30 p.m. puck drop.

Tickets are available for the Howland High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction banquet to be held Oct. 13 at DiLucia’s Banquet Center on Elm Road.

Weekly football statistics should be emailed to dchapin@vindy.com by 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Phone calls (330-747-1478) are also acceptable but emails and faxes are strongly preferred. Deadline is 10 p.m. with football results accepted until 11.

Anthony foundation targets Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is in Puerto Rico to unveil remodeled basketball courts at a public housing complex and play a bit of softball with celebrity friends.

It is the third time Anthony visits the U.S. territory in as many years to rebuild basketball courts through his charitable foundation.

The two newly remodeled courts, located in the northern city of Bayamon, are used by the island’s top minor league players and have produced players now part of the island’s Superior League, said Sports and Recreation Secretary Henry Neumann.

About 350 children currently use the two courts.

Leo Manzano to run Fifth Avenue Mile

NEW YORK

Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano will challenge defending champion Bernard Lagat in the Fifth Avenue Mile in Manhattan later this month.

In London, Manzano became the first American man to win an Olympic medal in the 1,500 meters since 1968. U.S. teammate Matt Centrowitz, who just missed bronze, will also take part in the race Sept. 22.
