Quilt group to host monthly meeting

A local quilt group will hosting its monthly meeting on Tuesday at Fair Park in Canfield. Member Ginger Mangie will teach interested members how to make a miniature pumpkin wall hangings. The cost of the kit is $8. Those interested in purchasing the kit should contact Ginger at 330-702-0532.

The class will begin at 5:30 p.m., and will break at 7 p.m. for the regular monthly meeting. The class will continue after the meeting. The quilt group is open to all interested quilters at all skill levels. For membership information, contact president Mary Rose Nordquist at maryrose821@att.net.

Bike smart at Mill Creek

Mill Creek MetroParks will be hosting the Bike Smart program, instructed by Mill Creek MetroParks Police Bike Patrol Officer Christian Hunter and Recreation Program Coordinator Angela McGrady. The program will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be bike riding lessons, a 10-mile bike ride, free gifts and more. Bring a bike, helmet, and packed lunch.

There is a $2 fee for Mahoning County residents and a $3 fee for non-residents. Call 330-740-7106 to register.

Poland Historical Society additional open house

The Poland Historical Society will host an additional Sunday open house at the Little Red Schoolhouse this year. Visitors can tour the one-room schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (state Route 224) at the Struthers Road intersection in Poland Township, on Oct. 14 from 1-3 p.m.

The society will hold its next regular meeting on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., Larry Baughman will present the program, “Poland Hopewell Iron Ore Furnace.”

Poland church hosts ‘Back to Church Sunday’

As part of a national movement of churches across America, “Back to Church Sunday” will be hosted by Poland Village Baptist Church in Poland at 11 a.m. on Sept. 16. Everyone is welcome to attend.

“Back to Church Sunday” is an initiative that is inviting America back to church. It seeks to reach people who once attended church, but don’t anymore and invite them to return for a special Sunday.

This event was launched four years ago in response to a survey of 15,000 adults in the United States. Since its inception, “Back to Church Sunday” participants have invited more than five million family members, friends and neighbors to their churches. About 14,000 churches are expected to participate this year, inviting more than two million visitors. Poland Village Baptist Church is a family-oriented church located at 79 Hill Drive in Poland. School of nursing to host annual alumni luncheon

The 25th annual alumni luncheon for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing will be held on Oct. 6 at The Center at Brittany Place, 336 Vienna Ave (Route 46), Niles. All nursing school alumni are invited to attend. Any alumnus who did not receive an invitation and would like to attend may request an invitation by calling Martha Laurie at 330-799-7406. Fall events at White House Fruit Farm

The White House Fruit Farm of Canfield will celebrate the fall season with its 30th annual Harvest Festival and Craft Show on today and Sunday. A large craft show will be held on the grounds of the farm and features artisans from around the region. Additional outdoor events include horse-drawn wagon rides through the orchards, food, fall candy and plenty of activities for the children.

Special fall outdoor events continue every weekend through Oct. 21. Fall hours for the market are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. White House Fruit Farm is located 10 minutes south of Canfield on Route 62. Meditation lecture to be Sept. 13

Renee Pitts will be this month’s guest speaker for the free monthly lecture series at Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center. The seminar, titled “Mindfulness Meditation,” will be held on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. This seminar will be an introduction to a variety of concepts in meditation, along with a guided meditation experience and meditation techniques to do at home.

Entertainers host vocal class

Professional entertainers Rick Blackson and Mary Jo Maluso are hosting a master class on the fundamentals of belt voice singing at Stage Left Academy in Canfield today. 20th anniversary celebration Sept. 22

The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be Sept. 22 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224. The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.

Poland Relay for Life

On Sept. 22, there will be a craft show and car show at the Negley Volunteer Fire Department, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. All profits from the refreshments will be donated to the Poland Relay for Life.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Poland library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Thursday in Sept. at 10:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Kids vote elections 2012

Vote for your favorite storybook character at the Poland library during regular business hours for the month of Sept.. Nominate your favorite storybook character; one nomination per library visit. Top storybook characters from the Sept. nominations will be on the October ballot. There will be three categories: toddler/preschool, grades K-2, and grades 3-6. In Oct. come to the Library to vote. Results will be posted Nov. 7.

Lego my library

Kids, ages 6 and up, can meet at the Poland library on Sept. 25 from 6-7 p.m. to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided.

Pajama jam is sleepy-time fun

Put on your PJ’s and bring out the whole family on Monday at 6:30 p.m. as the Poland library presents stories and other fun activities.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Trim a tree in Sept.

Children of all ages are welcome to decorate an ornament throughout the month of Sept. during regular hours at the Poland library for the all-seasons tree.

Ohio companies going global final program

The final program of this series on taking your company to the international market will highlight the rules, regulations, and compliances for exporters on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. Mousa Kassis, adjunct professor of economics at Youngstown State University and International Trade Advisor to the Small Business Development Center housed at Youngstown State University’s Williamson College of Business Administration, brings his expertise to these important issues.

Blood pressure screenings by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offered at the Poland library on Sept. 25 from 1-4 p.m.

Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries are now open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. Poland Rotary seeks golfers and sponsors for golf outing

The Poland Rotary will sponsor its annual community golf outing on Sept. 22 at Bedford Trails Golf Course, 713 Bedford Road, Lowellville. The four-person scramble has a 9 a.m. shotgun start and includes breakfast, lunch, 18 holes of golf with a cart, dinner, beverages and more.

The cost to play is $65 per person. The outing will offer door prizes, raffles, putting contest and a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, sponsored by Packer Thomas & Becker Funeral Homes. Hole sponsors for this event are $100 and can be purchased by contacting William Miner 330-503-0902. Reservations were due by Sept. 12. All proceeds from this event benefit local charities.
