OSHP sweep nabs wanted felons, DUI suspects

CLAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol says a two-day sweep in southwestern Ohio nabbed 18 wanted felons and led to 48 drunken-driving arrests.

The patrol’s Lt. Robin Schmutz said more than 90 troopers and nine other law enforcement officers combined on the sweep Tuesday and Wednesday in the Dayton area. The increased enforcement also resulted in 190 seat belt violations.

In addition, two weapons were seized and 35 drug-related offenses were discovered as officers seized marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, codeine and prescription narcotics.

The Dayton Daily News reports the 48-hour blitz was paid for mostly by budgeted agency overtime and federally-funded overtime money. The detail led to nearly 2,000 traffic stops and more than 1,100 enforcement actions.
