Quilt group to host monthly meeting
A local quilt group will hosting its monthly meeting on Tuesday at Fair Park in Canfield. Member Ginger Mangie will teach interested members how to make a miniature pumpkin wall hangings. The cost of the kit is $8. Those interested in purchasing the kit should contact Ginger at 330-702-0532. The class will begin at 5:30 p.m., and will break at 7 p.m. for the regular monthly meeting. The class will continue after the meeting. The quilt group is open to all interested quilters at all skill levels. Fall lecture series at the Canfield Historical Society
The Canfield Historical Society will be hosting a fall lecture series at the Bond House, located at 44 W. Main St, Canfield, across from the Canfield library. Lectures are free and open to the public. No pre-registration is necessary. Lectures are appropriate for all ages.
Upcoming lectures in the series are “History of Ohio Quilting” by Clare Neff and Betty Aberson on Oct. 11 and “Select Pieces from the Canfield Historical Society Collection” by Canfield High School Curator Laura Zeh on Nov. 8.

Bike smart at Mill Creek
Mill Creek MetroParks will be hosting the Bike Smart program, instructed by Mill Creek MetroParks Police Bike Patrol Officer Christian Hunter and Recreation Program Coordinator Angela McGrady. The program will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be bike riding lessons, a 10-mile bike ride, free gifts and more. Bring a bike, helmet, and packed lunch. There is a $2 fee for Mahoning County residents and a $3 fee for non-residents. Call 330-740-7106 to register.
Meditation lecture to be Sept. 13
Renee Pitts will be this month’s guest speaker for the free monthly lecture series at Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center. The seminar, titled “Mindfulness Meditation,” will be held on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. This seminar will be an introduction to a variety of concepts in meditation, along with a guided meditation experience and meditation techniques to do at home.

Fall events at White House Fruit Farm
The White House Fruit Farm of Canfield will celebrate the fall season with its 30th annual Harvest Festival and Craft Show on today and Sunday. A large craft show will be held on the grounds of the farm and features artisans from around the region. Additional outdoor events include horse-drawn wagon rides through the orchards, food, fall candy and plenty of activities for the children.
Special fall outdoor events continue every weekend through Oct. 21. Fall hours for the market are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. White House Fruit Farm is located 10 minutes south of Canfield on Route 62. Girl Scouts to host open house
The Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio will host an open house at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the Canfield United Methodist Church. Attendees will meet other adults and girls in the community running troops. Adults may volunteer to be a group leader. Registration and volunteer applications will be available at the open house. The cost is $12 a year to become a member of the organization. Professional entertainers host vocal class
Professional entertainers Rick Blackson and Mary Jo Maluso are hosting a master class on the fundamentals of belt voice singing at Stage Left Academy in Canfield on Sept. 15. 20th anniversary celebration to be Sept. 22
The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be Sept. 22 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224. The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.
Canfield open houses scheduled
Canfield Schools will be hosting open houses for the upcoming 2012-13 school year. Canfield High School will host an open house on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
The Canfield library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help children (ages 2-3) become successful readers every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Workshop to provide financial peace
Canfield Presbyterian Church will host Dave Ramsey’s program titled “Financial Peace University,” an educational and skill-building workshop with Bible-based concepts that can give hope to anyone from the financially distressed to the financially secure.
This nine-week course will be led by Jill McCullough, a certified financial planner and assistant professor at Youngstown State University. Both married couples and singles are invited to attend and classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m., beginning Sept. 19. Child care will be available. Tales to tails at library
Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library on Monday at 6:30 p.m. School-age readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs. Sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library.
Monstrous art contest to be hosted
First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16. To coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County.
Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork.
Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award.
Entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Duct tape couture
Stop by the library on Monday at 2:30 p.m. to make some super fashionable duct tape creations. Bring your friends and the library will provide the duct tape. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Cross the finish line
Think you know young adult fiction? See if you can identify the title of the book from just the novel’s last sentence during regular business hours at the Canfield library throughout the month of September. If you know your lines, you could win a prize. The event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Coupon swap at the library
A coupon swap will be hosted by the Canfield library today at 10 a.m. to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.
Women’s book discussion club to meet
The Canfield women’s book discussion group will meet every third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. If you are interested in joining a book club or attending a Conversation Salon, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086 for more information.

Learn about downloading library ebooks to your Nook device and how to use the digital catalog on Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Space is very limited, so sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library to register for this event.
Get your blood pressure checked
A free blood pressure check by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will be offered at the Canfield library on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Libraries to have Sunday hours
Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries are now open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.
Vendors needed for festival and craft show
Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.
The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.
