Funds for kids
YOUNGSTOWN
The D&E Center Children’s Circle of Friends Foundation recently presented the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley with a donation of $5,000 toward its 2012 campaign.
The proceeds donated to United Way were raised during the Circle of Friends Foundation’s charity golf outing at The Lake Club on July 9.
“The United Way works very hard to expand the opportunity for children with emotional and behavioral problems to get the help they need in our Valley. It’s great to help them in that effort. It is the Circle of Friends Foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life of these children — our society’s ‘invisible children,’” said Greg Cvetkovic, the foundation’s president.
Murder trial delayed
WARREN
The trial date for Louis Mann, 32, facing the death penalty in the slayings of his parents Sept. 30, 2011, has been delayed one year.
On Thursday, the trial date was moved from Oct. 12, 2012, to Oct. 2, 2013, to give attorneys for the prosecution and defense adequate time to prepare. Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court approved the move.
Police said Mann admitted strangling his mother with a clothesline and killing his father by beating him with a metal flashlight and shooting him at their home on Jefferson Street Southwest.
911 call problems
WARREN
Problems affecting area Century Link customers caused problems for the Trumbull County and Warren 911 call centers, but the problems were corrected by 6 p.m.
Calls to Warren’s dispatch center were being “rolled over” from the 911 line to the center’s business line, a dispatcher said.
The problem also affected Century Link Internet customers for several hours earlier in the day. A Century Link representative said she didn’t know how widespread the problem was.
