BGMS wins invitational
Boardman Glenwood’s girls cross country team placed first at the Sweeney Invitational at Champion. Casey Zaitzew, Cassie Stitt and Savannah Beule finished in the top 10 with second, third, and 10th-place finishes, respectively. Lauren Pavlansky and Allison Janak had strong finishes to the seal the first-place finish.
In the boys race, Nathaniel Ams made a strong showing individually with a third-place finish overall out of more than 80 runners.
BGMS volleyball loses
Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade volleyball team lost two matches at West Branch on Sept. 6. The team lost 25-18, 25-27 and 25-22 to West Branch. They also fell to Salem, 25-13 and 25-18, making its season record 1-5. Leading the team in aces were Zoe Sims and Briawna Santiago.
The eighth-grade team also fell to West Branch, 25-9 and 25-19. It also lost to Salem, 25-8 and 25-9, making the season record 2-4. Defensive leaders were Emily Hurl and Charlotte Voytko.
Boys soccer loses to Archbishop Hoban
On Sept. 4, the Spartans boys soccer team hosted the unbeaten Black Knights from Archbishop Hoban. Hoban scored twice early in the game and held a 2-0 halftime advantage. Boardman cut that lead to 2-1 when freshman Adam Deeley assisted on a goal by junior Luke Marsco.
Hoban, however, scored again late in the game for a 3-1 final.
The Spartans were able to remain competitive in this game thanks to excellent defensive play by senior Alan Olson and 13 saves by senior goalkeeper Anthony Calautti.
In the junior varsity match, Boardman and Hoban were locked in a scoreless tie at halftime, but Hoban was able to register a goal 10 minutes into the second half. Only a few minutes later, the game was suspended due to weather and was not resumed. Sophomore Brian Fryda had for saves in the goal for Boardman.
Match against Lakeview rescheduled
The Boardman boys soccer game against undefeated Lakeview on Sept. 6 was suspended with the Bulldogs holding a 2-0 lead near the end of the first half.
The game will resume Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.
The junior varsity game was played prior to the inclement weather and resulted in a 2-0 Boardman victory. Kyle Kondas had two assists in the game, one each to Nick Mancini and Anthony Pallante. Meanwhile, Fryda had three saves as keeper.
Boys soccer ties Howland
Boardman boys soccer team battled Howland to a scoreless tie. Boardman goalie Calautti had three saves.
In the junior varsity match, Boardman lost 1-0. Fryda had one save by stopping a penalty kick early in the first half.
BGMS cross country takes second
Last Wednesday, the Boardman Glenwood boys cross country team pulled off a second-place finish at Girard. Scoring for the boys were Nathaniel Ams, Matt Maroni, Mark Moradian, Austin Bacho and Chris Petrus.
The girls team ran a tough race to come in third overall, beating Center for the first time this season. Scoring for the girls were Cassie Stitt, Casey Zaitzew, Savannah Beule, Allison Janak and Kayla Welton.
Boardman boys cross country finishes first
The Boardman varsity boys cross country team successfully opened the 2012 Suburban League season with a victory over eight other schools on Sept. 4 at Austintown Township Park.
The Spartans placed six of the top 10 runners. Junior Mark Hadley took first in a time of 16:04, while fellow junior Alan Burns was second overall with a time of 16:43. They were followed by freshman Nathan Hadley, who placed fourth with a new personal-best time of 17:16.
Junior Justin Maroni turned in a time of 17:24 to place sixth, while sophomore Juan Santiago took eighth with a time of 17:50. Sam Sheronovich, a senior, was 10th overall with a time of 17:58.
BGMS volleyball falls AMS Blue
Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade volleyball team lost to AMS Blue 29-27 and 25-20. The leading scorer was Rachel Hritz with floor leaders being Ashley Clark and Riley Zawrotuk.
The eighth-grade team defeated AMS Blue 25-22 and 25-18, improving to 2-2 on the season. The leading scorer was Lexi Stutz with floor leaders being Kristen Bean and Nicolette Martino.
MetroParks hosts girls volleyball clinic
Mill Creek MetroParks will be hosting a girls volleyball clinic for ages 11-14 today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., instructed by Walsh University’s all-conference former volleyball player, Natalie Borland. There will be one-on-one instruction on perfect serving, passing, hitting, blocking skills, and more. Bring water and a packed lunch. The fee is $15 for Mahoning County residents and $18 for non-residents. The clinic will be at the new sand volleyball courts at Wick Recreation Area, 1861 McCollum Road, Youngstown. Youngstown Orthopaedic Saturday sports clinic
Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates’ Saturday sports clinics, geared specifically to fall sports student-athletes in need of immediate attention to sports injuries, is running. The clinics run from 9-11 a.m. every Saturday throughout the high school sports season.
These clinics are open to players involved in football, volleyball, soccer, golf and other high school and college sports. They are held at the practice’s Building A at the northwest corner of Tippecanoe Road and Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. More information is available at www.youngstownortho.com.
