Quilt group to host monthly meeting

A local quilt group will hosting its monthly meeting on Tuesday at Fair Park in Canfield. Member Ginger Mangie will teach interested members how to make a miniature pumpkin wall hangings. The cost of the kit is $8. Those interested in purchasing the kit should contact Ginger at 330-702-0532. The class will begin at 5:30 p.m., and will break at 7 p.m. for the regular monthly meeting. The class will continue after the meeting. The quilt group is open to all interested quilters at all skill levels. Bike smart at Mill Creek

Mill Creek MetroParks will be hosting the Bike Smart program, instructed by Mill Creek MetroParks Police Bike Patrol Officer Christian Hunter and Recreation Program Coordinator Angela McGrady. The program will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be bike riding lessons, a 10-mile bike ride, free gifts and more. Bring a bike, helmet, and packed lunch. There is a $2 fee for Mahoning County residents and a $3 fee for non-residents. Call 330-740-7106 to register.

Fall events at White House Fruit Farm

The White House Fruit Farm of Canfield will celebrate the fall season with its 30th annual Harvest Festival and Craft Show on today and Sunday. A large craft show will be held on the grounds of the farm and features artisans from around the region. Additional outdoor events include horse-drawn wagon rides through the orchards, food, fall candy and plenty of activities for the children.

Special fall outdoor events continue every weekend through Oct. 21. Fall hours for the market are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. White House Fruit Farm is located 10 minutes south of Canfield on Route 62. Meditation lecture to be Sept. 13

Renee Pitts will be this month’s guest speaker for the free monthly lecture series at Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center. The seminar, titled “Mindfulness Meditation,” will be held on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. This seminar will be an introduction to a variety of concepts in meditation, along with a guided meditation experience and meditation techniques to do at home.

School of nursing to host annual alumni luncheon

The 25th annual alumni luncheon for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing will be held on Oct. 6 at The Center at Brittany Place, 336 Vienna Ave (Route 46), Niles. Arts and crafts show to be Sunday

An arts and crafts show will take place on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Stacy Pavilion in the Austintown Township Park on Kirk Road. A variety of crafts will be on display and for sale, as well as paintings in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pencil and ink. Jewelry and photography will also be displayed and for sale. Professional entertainers host vocal class

Professional entertainers Rick Blackson and Mary Jo Maluso are hosting a master class on the fundamentals of belt voice singing at Stage Left Academy in Canfield today. 20th anniversary celebration to be Sept. 22

The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be Sept. 22 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224. The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.

Baby Brilliant event to happen in Austintown

The Austintown library will host Baby Brilliant events every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Austintown library every Wednesday in September at 11 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Play with an iPad

Parents should call 330-744-8636 and ask for an Austintown librarian to discuss your child’s session with an iPad. They will ask for the subject area you would like to explore with your child and schedule a twenty minute session on Sept. 22, starting at 9:30 a.m. During your personal appointment, the librarian will briefly demonstrate two specially selected apps and leave the rest of the time for you and your child to interact and explore together. Use the library’s iPad or bring your own. Registration is required, and space is limited. This event is for kids from age 4 to those in sixth grade. Child must be accompanied by an adult.

Friends of the Austintown library meeting

The Friends of the Austintown library meeting and presentation, featuring Ron Elkins, a Poland resident who retired from the Foreign Service after 24 years as a Special Agent with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security, will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. Elkins will talk about his experiences in service, including his last assignment with the State Department was as Deputy of the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary, being an officer in the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne) which was housed in the Army Reserve Unit in Youngstown until it was deactivated in 1992, and earning his commission through the Army ROTC program at YSU in 1982.

Immaculate Heart of Mary to host trunk sale

The Immaculate Heart of Mary will host a “Treasures in Your Trunk Sale,” sponsored by its social concerns group, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. today. The sale will take place in the church parking lot, 4500 Norquest Blvd, Austintown. Vendor spaces are no longer available. No refunds will be given for any reason. Homemade baked goods, food and beverages will be on sale as well. A used book sale will take place in the Parish Center at the same time.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.
