Hardwood company remains open despite fire at warehouse

CORTLAND

Eleven fire departments helped the Cortland Fire Department extinguish a fire in a warehouse/production building at Cortland Hardwood Products on North Mecca Street (state Route 46).

It caused substantial damage to one of several buildings at the business but didn’t damage or affect the retail operation, according to the Cortland Fire Department.

The fire started about 8:50 p.m. Monday in a building used by the company to stain and finish hardwood products. As of Tuesday, it wasn’t known what caused the blaze, but representatives from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were preparing to come to the site Tuesday to assist in the investigation.

A Cortland fire official said the chemicals in the building used for staining and finishing apparently were the reason the fire burned with an orange-red glow. No injuries were reported.

The company stocks thousands of interior doors, mouldings and stair parts in oak, poplar, maple, cherry, hickory, walnut, ash and pine, according to the company’s website.

The company also manufactures and supplies mouldings, mantels, tongue-and-groove flooring, stair parts, interior doors, door hardware, decorative hardware, custom woodwork, countertops, cabinet doors, drawer fronts and many other items.
