1813: An American naval force commanded by Oliver H. Perry defeats the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

1846: Elias Howe receives a patent for his sewing machine.

1939: Canada declares war on Germany.

1962: The U.S. Supreme Court orders the University of Mississippi to admit James Meredith, a black student.

1972: At the Munich Olympics, the U.S. Olympic basketball team loses to the Soviets, 51-50, in a gold-medal in which officials order the final three seconds of the game replayed, enabling the Soviets to win.

1987: Pope John Paul II arrives in Miami, where he is welcomed by President and Mrs. Reagan as he begins a 10-day tour of the United States.

1987: U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., making his first New Hampshire appearance as a hopeful for the Democratic nomination for president, warns of a looming nationwide economic depression. While acknowledging the New Hampshire has an unemployment rate of 3 percent, Traficant says voters there should be concerned about the plight of people in depressed areas.

1972: James E. Might, 19, the son of a Canfield physician, is killed when the car he was driving left Leffingwell Road and struck a tree. It was Mahoning County’s 45th traffic fatality of the year.

Three bishops — the Most Rev. James E. Walsh, Edward T. O’Meara and James W. Malone — concelebrate Mass at St. Columba Cathedral to mark the 150th anniversary of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

1962: Five teenagers are injured when a firecracker slips out of the hand of a passenger and explodes in a car driven by Charles Tieche, 17, of Canfield. The car went out of control and struck a tree in Raccoon Road.

Seventy-two driver-salesmen, members of Teamsters Local 377, go on strike against the Nickles Bakery, which serves Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Ashtabula and Portage counties.

1937: Roy “Happy” Mariano, convicted bank robber and Youngstown underworld figure, is found murdered on the J.C. Ashford farm near Rogers. His body had 18 bullet wounds.

With only four days left in which to pay without penalty, Mahoning County taxpayers have paid more than $2 million in real estate taxes at the county treasurer’s office, about two-thirds of the total charge.
