A collision with a deer left two people dead early Sunday after their motorcycle hit the animal on State Route 534.

The driver, Bruce Harrington, 55, of Mogadore, and his passenger, Samantha Rafferty, 34, of Atwater, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Warren post.

Harrington was traveling southbound when a deer crossed the road. When the motorcycle hit the deer, it overturned and sent both Harrington and Mogadore into a guardrail. Neither rider was wearing a helmet, according to the patrol.

Mill Creek MetroParks’ fall festival, Sunset at the Farm, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the MetroParks Farm, state Route 46 across from the Canfield Fairgrounds.

The free event features hayrides on wagons pulled by draft horses, campfire entertainment with Jon Mosey and freshly made apple butter and cider.

Children can visit with farm animals, roast marshmallows and take a trip through a cornfield maze. The fun and educational AgVenture Barn also will be open. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on at the campfire. For information, call the Ford Nature Center at 330-740-7107.

Gray to Green event

Area residents are invited to donate usable household items between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday at the Gray to Green Festival at Wick Park.

Those wishing to view and take the items free of charge may do so between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the park.

The goal of the program, sponsored by the Mahoning County recycling division, is to make unwanted but useful items available to others and keep them out of landfills. Donations may include baby items, bedding, canned food, clothing, shoes and accessories, toys, kitchen items, tableware and plastic food containers.

Ramp cleanup

The Westside Citizens Coalition will have a highway ramp cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 22, and volunteers are needed.

Volunteers will meet at Borts Field near the tennis courts at 9 a.m. for a brief safety course and will then be divided into teams and sent to different Interstate 680 ramps on the city’s West Side.

Tools, bags, vests and gloves will be provided. After the cleanup, Foxy’s on Meridian Road will offer lunch to the volunteers.

The Mill Creek Park Association, doing business as Forest Lawn Cemetery, 5400 Market St., will have its annual lot owners meeting at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 in the chapel. All lot owners are invited to attend.
