Sunrise Assisted Living brought the culture of Hawaii to its residents during the facility’s annual Luau on Aug. 23.
“It’s our annual luau — we have it every year in the summer. We invite the public and the residents’ family and friends. We always have a good turnout,” said Reminiscence Coordinator Fury Kuzma.
Residents enjoyed the festivities of the day with their friends, family members and neighbors while they ate Hawaiian-inspired food and played games.
“We did a hula contest, a best-dressed contest, a limbo contest and lots of dancing. The residents made homemade Hawaiian necklaces,” Kuzma said.
The event not only provided a chance for residents to enjoy themselves, but also gave senior citizens from surrounding areas an opportunity to interact and socialize with the Sunrise community.
“I think it’s good for the community to see Sunrise and especially because Poland doesn’t have a senior center and it’s a place where seniors can come together that’s free,” Kuzma said.
