Girl Scouts to host open house

The Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio will host an open house at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the Canfield United Methodist Church. Attendees will meet other adults and girls in the community running troops. Adults may volunteer to be a group leader. Registration and volunteer applications will be available at the open house. The cost is $12 a year to become a member of the organization. Professional entertainers host vocal class

Professional entertainers Rick Blackson and Mary Jo Maluso are hosting a master class on the fundamentals of belt voice singing at Stage Left Academy in Canfield on Sept. 15. 20th anniversary celebration to be Sept. 22

The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be Sept. 22 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224. The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.

Canfield Cub Scout Pack 25 round-up

Boys in first through fifth grade or 7-10 years old interested in joining Cub Scouts can attend the Canfield Cub Scout Pack 25 round-up on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Camp Stambaugh on Leffingwell Road or the fall family camp starting at noon on Oct. 20 at Camp Akela. Baby Brilliant event to happen in Canfield

The Canfield library will host a Baby Brilliant event on Monday at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Canfield open houses scheduled

Canfield Schools will be hosting open houses for the upcoming 2012-13 school year. Canfield High School will host an open house on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Canfield library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help children (ages 2-3) become successful readers every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Workshop to provide financial peace

Canfield Presbyterian Church will host Dave Ramsey’s program titled “Financial Peace University,” an educational and skill-building workshop with Bible-based concepts that can give hope to anyone from the financially distressed to the financially secure.

This nine-week course will be led by Jill McCullough, a certified financial planner and assistant professor at Youngstown State University. Both married couples and singles are invited to attend and classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m., beginning Sept. 19. Child care will be available. Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Canfield library every Tuesday in September at 1:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guess ‘n go at the library

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during regular business hours during the month of September. The closest guess wins. This event if for children of all ages.

Lego my library set

Children age 6 and up can meet at Canfield Library from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday to create Lego designs. The event lasts approximately two hours. Legos will be provided.

Tales to tails at library

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. School-age readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs. Sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16. To coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County.

Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork.

Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award.

Contest began Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Duct tape couture

Stop by the library on Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. to make some super fashionable duct tape creations. Bring your friends and the library will provide the duct tape. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Cross the finish line

Think you know young adult fiction? See if you can identify the title of the book from just the novel’s last sentence during regular business hours at the Canfield library throughout the month of September. If you know your lines, you could win a prize. The event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Coupon swap at the library

A coupon swap will be hosted by the Canfield library on Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.

Women’s book discussion club to meet

The Canfield women’s book discussion group will meet every third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. If you are interested in joining a book club or attending a Conversation Salon, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086 for more information.

A free blood pressure check by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will be offered at the Canfield library on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.

Libraries to have Sunday hours

Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning this Sunday.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. Her next presentation will be on Wednesday on the topis of meat and dairy. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. The lecture is free and open to the public.
