Professional entertainers host vocal class
Professional entertainers Rick Blackson and Mary Jo Maluso are hosting a master class on the fundamentals of belt voice singing at Stage Left Academy in Canfield on Sept. 15. Times for classes will be pre-teen from 1-2 p.m., teen and up from 3-4:30 p.m. For more information, call 330-702-1717. Shops 20th anniversary celebration
The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be Sept. 22 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224. The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.
Local author to speak on parish school
The St. Charles Borromeo parish library committee will sponsor a talk by local educational historian, Thomas G. Welsh, at 7 p.m. on Sept. 20, at the parish’s ministries building, 7345 Westview Dr., Boardman.
Welsh, author of “Closing Chapters: Urban Change, Religious Reform, and the Decline of Youngstown’s Catholic Elementary Schools,” will discuss factors that led to the virtual disappearance of the city’s parish schools between 1960 and 2006. Boardman local elected Commandant
Alan Kozak of Boardman has been elected and installed as Commandant of the Marine Corps League Tri-State Detachment No. 494. Kozak enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 and served until December 1970. Since then, he has been involved in the Marine Corps League, volunteering for such programs as Toys for Tots.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
The Boardman library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Boardman library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
It’s a medieval affair at the library
Arrive at the Boardman library on Thursday at 7 p.m. dressed in costume as a knight or a princess to the medieval tournament with stories and games. Program will last one hour and will honor top readers from the summer reading program. Children of all ages will make an edible “dragon egg” craft. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. The Boardman Friends of the Library meeting and presentation, “Observations in Art and Life” with Dr. Lou Zona, Director, Butler Institute of American Art on Wick Avenue, will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.

Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning this Sunday.

Make and play-it tween tournament
Make a yarn yo-yo and a ladder golf game at the Boardman library on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. and challenge your friends. This one-hour program is open to students in grades 4-6 and they will “Crown a Champion.”
Martino motorsports at the Boardman Library
Drivers Tom and Ryan Martino will have a special story time presentation at the Boardman library on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. They will sign autographs and read to the children. You can also check out their race car dragster in the parking lot.
Monstrous art contest to be hosted
First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Contest begins Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
Jigsaw puzzle swap
Done with your jigsaw puzzle and want to try another? The Boardman library will be hosting a puzzle swap at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Join fellow jigsaw enthusiasts and swap puzzles. This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.
Library books for Nook users
Bring your Nook to the Boardman library on Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. and the librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog. Space is limited so sign-up required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Boardman library.
Vendors needed for festival and craft show
Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.
The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.
Local doctor offers free health lectures
Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. A lecture will be presented on Wednesday about meat and dairy. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. The lecture is free and open to the public.
