YBI event Friday to benefit United Way

The Youngstown Business Incubator will host the Pop Up Park and Uncle Jim’s Cook-off from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday to benefit the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.

The event will be at the YBI campus at 241 W. Federal St. It will be an opportunity for community business members to network with those working at the YBI campus. Attendees will have a chance to act as a chef, spectator or voter. Interested parties should register with Rose Shaffer by calling 330-746-5003.

New Sparkle opens

The South Avenue Sparkle Market officially opened its doors Aug. 28 in the former location of Cochran’s Sparkle Market, 4121 South Ave.

The new owners, Tony and Theresa Modarelli, will host a grand-opening event and ribbon-cutting at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 20.

The store features a bakery, deli, U.S. Department of Agriculture choice beef, and a fresh produce section.

The grocery store will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

In running for grant

The United Methodist Community Center in Youngstown and Warren is in the running for a $5 million competitive grant program with Chase Bank.

The organization is asking for community support through online voting at www.ChaseCommunity-Giving.com.

If the organization is voted in the top 196 non- profit organizations nationwide, they will split the $5 million with other organizations across the country.

Chase customers will have two votes on the website, and all others can cast one vote via Facebook or at the Chase website.
