Workshop set on reusing vacant land

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. hosts a “Dealing with Urban Soils” workshop, as part of its Vacant Land Reuse Workshop series, from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The workshop, located on Mineral Springs Avenue, between Glenwood Avenue and Volney Road on the South Side, is free. An expert on vacant-land reuse will present low-cost ways to test soils for contamination, assess site conditions and amend soil on demolition lots in order to safely grow food.

The seminar will focus on how to deal with lead contamination, strategies for compacted soils, and how to add organic matter to plants. For information, call 330-480-0423.

Nominations sought for hall of fame

WARREN

The board of directors of the Warren High Schools’ Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame is accepting nominations until Nov. 1 for the Class of 2013. Outstanding graduates will be inducted at the 20th Annual Awards Banquet on May 4, 2013.

The honorees will be graduates who have made significant contributions in their fields as well as society, the state or on a global scale. Nominees must be graduates of one of the three Warren public high schools: Warren High School, Warren G. Harding High School or Warren Western Reserve High School.

Anyone who knows a well-qualified or deserving graduate who has been out of high school for at least 12 years can fill out a nomination form available at the board of education office. Nomination forms also can be obtained by downloading a nomination form from the Warren Schools’ website at www.warrenschools.k12.oh.us.

Managers say safe was stolen

AUSTINTOWN

Managers at Los Gallos restaurant at 920 N. Canfield-Niles Road told police that a safe was taken from the restaurant during a break-in.

The report was filed about 9:30 a.m. Monday, and police still are investigating.

Poland police probe theft at winery

POLAND

Township police are investigating a theft reported at L’uva Bella Winery, 6597 Center Road.

The owner told police about $1,000 came up missing between June 1 and Aug. 23.

Zoning meeting set

Lowellville

The village of Lowellville will have a special zoning meeting 7:30 p.m. today at village hall, 140 E. Liberty St. The purpose is to discuss variance requests, replats, and other general business.
