Scrappers drop in extras

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

Samuel Gonzalez hit a pinch-hit, RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the State College Spikes over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 5-4 on Tuesday.

Gonzalez stepped in for Starling Marte who went 0-5 and was in State College on a rehab assignment. Luis Encarnacion took the loss and recorded one out in the inning.

Ryan Merritt started for teh Scrappers (30-44) and went 5 1/2 innings giving up four hits and three runs while striking out five.

Mahoning Valley scored first with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.

Richard Stock and Erik Gonzalez each had two of the Scrappers’ nine hits. They also committed four errors.

The season finale is tonight at 7:05 against the Spikes (34-41).
